Conquer the South Downs with Joshua Orphan & Community Care

Every day in Malawi children walk miles to collect water, harvest food, attend school and go to work. Join Joshua on the 19th September for a roller-coaster ride over arguably one of the highlights of the South Downs.

The children in Malawi are eager to learn, however it is common that many are orphaned or their families cannot afford secondary school fees. For every £240 raised, a child will be able to attend Joshua’s very own secondary school for four years and get a life changing education.

Sign up now and challenge yourself to 8.5 or 20 miles:

8.5 mile from Eastbourne – Alfriston approx 6 hours

20 mile Eastbourne – Alfriston – Eastbourne approx 9 hours

If you would like to participate then please e-mail andy@joshuainmalawi.org.uk for an entry form and post to it to 1b Buxton Rd, Brighton, BN1 5DE. You will then receive your WALK FOR MALAWI pack and event T-shirt.  You can set up your own Virgin Money Giving Page right here.

Can’t make the walk? Then you can donate miles on-line and help us reach out to Malawi at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/walkformalawi. £1 buys 1 mile with a virtual 4889 miles distancing the UK from Malawi.

Wanting to donate by cheque? Post to: Joshua Orphan & Community Care, Dene Cottage, Woldingham Road, Woldingham, Surrey CR3 7LA.

Clinic Grand Opening

On the 3rd July 2010 the Pensulo Clinic opened its doors for business.

The clinic was built with the combined efforts of staff from the Royal Bank of Scotland and volunteers from both Quest Overseas and Inspire-Worldwide expeditions. The Clinic Appeal campaign was a great success and raised a staggering £20,857 with the donations still coming in.

Already the clinic is being filled with beds and medicines so that the newly appointed nurse can get on with treatments for the local people of Pensulo. The clinic is now able to treat illnesses such as malaria and dehydration as well as acting as a maternity clinic for pregnant mothers.

Crowds gather to await the opening ceremony.

Joshua's hard working fundis.

The Maternity clinic begins to fill with equipment and lies ready for its first patient.

The local people get the first glimpse inside the completed Clinic Building.

Why is the clinic so important for Pensulo?

Without the clinic at Pensulo people in the village and surrounding area have to walk up to 8 miles to receive treatment. As a pregnant mother with no means of transport this is a frightening prospect. Recently in the village a child from Milo school died from malaria as his family could not afford to get him to the nearest clinic in Blantyre.

Over the last two years this huge project has been an awesome undertaking. In 2008 40 volunteers from the Royal Bank of Scotland built the main construction in just 8 weeks. Groups from Quest Overseas and Inspire Worldwide have added doctor and nursing housing and guardian shelters. The on going battle to get the clinic fed with water and electricity is now nearly over with the final herdle to fill it with the equipment it needs.

Lily Grace's Story

Three weeks ago Maria a young lady from Pensulo found herself desperately attempting to walk the 8 miles to the nearest clinic to give birth. On route she went into labour and was extremely lucky to be spotted by a passing policeman and driven to the clinic. It was just in time and just hours later she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Lily Grace.

This is a typical story for many to be mothers in Pensulo but unfortunately the outcome is normally very different. Most mothers are forced to give birth at home or worse outside with no medical assistance meaning many lose their babies.

So please plunge deep into those pockets and sponsor something from the list. Its extremely easy, just go to www.justgiving.com/pensuloclinicappeal and give what you can. You can also send cheques to - JOCT, c/o Dene Cottage, Woldingham Road, Woldingham, Surrey, CR3 7LA.
