Footballing fathers help tackle poverty

Running around a wet, muddy field in Sussex may not sound like the obvious way to help tackle poverty in Malawi, but for a group of over 50 fathers and friends of Hurstpierpoint College, it's the perfect opportunity to do so.

For three years now the club, known as Real Socialdads FC, have been donning their boots on a Monday night to play the "beautiful game", and all the time they've been donating their subs to Joshua. And that's not all, inspired by the difference their support makes, they've held curry nights, golf days and clay pigeon shooting events in aid of Joshua. In total they have raised an incredible £6,500 for our life changing work in Malawi.
Field Officer Stevie Chigabula training Care Givers

The money raised by the Real Socialdads FC supports the vital work of Joshua's five Field Officers who live and work in the communities they serve, helping us to ensure that support reaches those who need it most. They have a wide range of responsibilities, a week, in the words of one field officer "can be spent being everywhere." They could be interviewing sponsored students, running training for our Care Givers on pre-school education, or supporting our community health clinics. Their work is integral to Joshua's success and we are incredible grateful to every member of Real Socialdads FC for their fantastic support.

It's thanks to their support that Joseph Pade (pictured below with his three sisters) is now back in school.

Joseph lives with his parents, three sisters and two brothers in the semi-urban slum of Baluti. When his father fell ill with Tuberculosis in 2012 the family fell into deep poverty, unable to afford his school fees Joseph was thrown out of secondary school and was forced to stay at home to look after his younger siblings.

But thanks to Real Socialdads FC's support, our field officer Stevie Chigabula was working in this area and heard about Joseph's situation. He sprung into action, assessing Joseph for sponsorship and although we have quite a waiting list I'm delighted to let you know that Joseph started back at school last September.

If Stevie had not been working in Baluti it's unlike that Joseph would ever have known about, let alone been accepted onto Joshua's sponsorship programme. But thanks to Real Socialdads FC's support he is now back in school, working towards his dream of on day becoming an accountant. Oh, and in his spare time, just like the members of Real Socialdads FC, he loves to play football.
